Final Few Days to Submit Stories for #BOBSF22

As the year draws to a close, I hope you have had a splendid 2022.

When we started this year, did any of us predict a year like it? It has certainly been a year full of news, and a lot of it quite doom-laden.

From the three unwise PMs, and the end of the second Elizabethan era... to the hitherto unfathomable idea of a war in Europe. Protest and bloodshed. Strikes and crises (money; food; energy: take your pick). Elon Musk ruining Twitter for everyone, and AI threatening creative livelihoods. A World Cup built on the backs of modern-day slaves, and the horrible realisation that sports-washing works...

As these interesting times have unfolded, science fiction writers have been trying to keep pace with the fast-changing planet. Some of those stories written in the shock of the now will make their way before me in the submissions for Best of British Science Fiction 2022, though many of the stories may have been written in 2021 or earlier. I wonder how much of the world's reach I will be able to discern in those narratives...? How many stories will try to predict something a little more positive for 2023 and beyond? I tend to get most of my submissions in the first few days of the new year, so we shall wait and see.

If you would like to send me a story to consider for Best of British Science Fiction 2022, you have until just 10th January to get in touch. The guidelines are here on the Newcon Press site.

This anthology series has been continuous since Best of British Science Fiction 2016, and here are some of the nice comments critics have made about the series:

The Best of British Science Fiction 2021 is a book for intelligent, literary readers who want new ideas relayed though interesting characters via polished prose.

The anthology is a wonderfully mixed bag of stories, and well worth a read – if only to catch up on 2016’s eclectic, brilliant takes on what the future could bring!

Good luck, wonderful writers - and a Happy New Year for 2023!
